by Susan M. Love, M.D. with Karen Lindsey
Dr. Susan Love spoke at the the first World Conference on Breast Cancer Advocacy in Brussels, where it was announced that her book will shortly be published in Britain. A breast surgeon, Dr. Susan Love is a warm, humourous and direct speaker with a comprehensive knowledge of breast cancer research and issues. The book is the standard reference text in the US and cited in many breast cancer bibliographies.I bought Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book on a recent trip to the US. The fully revised second edition has an Introduction which shows Dr. Susan Love to be an excellent listener as well as a good speaker and writer. Additional material has been included, reflecting new research since the first edition into the causes, treatment and prevention of breast cancer. Dr. Susan Love followed publication of the first edition with a lecture tour of the US and the new edition also expands on matters raised by women with breast cancer, such as metastatic disease and recurrence, of which she writes:
This is typical of the accessible style of the book, and Dr. Susan Love closes the Introduction to this edition with the comment:"Women who find thinking about it too scary can skip these parts; those who are curious and feel more brave will want to read them. Each woman who has to contend with this phase of breast cancer will find we are there holding her hand."The book contains 34 chapters in seven parts:"... we have designed the book with the understanding that some readers will want to read it from cover to cover while others will want to choose only the sections of interest of particular interest to them. Take what you want from our book. We wrote it for you."
The Appendices include Resources, References and Additional Reading relating to each of these sections. There is also a Glossary, a list of Drugs used for Systemic Treatment of Breast Cancer and information on American support organisations. There are chapters on Complementary and Alternative Treatments and The Politics of Breast Cancer.
- The Healthy Breast

- Diagnosis of Breast Problems
- The Causes of Breast Cancer
- The Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
- Treating Breast Cancer
- Living with Breast Cancer
Unlike many books on cancer written from an American perspective, Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book does not present information in a way that seems irrelevant to the British experience of treatment. The authors' language and editorial style are not impenetrably scientific or patronising. There is, however, vast room for improvement in the drawings (especially the cartoons), which generally do not add to the text.
Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book provides essential information in a supportive context for those affected by breast cancer who are seeking to understand the illness and involve themselves in its treatment. It will become a much-thumbed addition to any individual's or organisation's breast cancer reference library.
