To Marie Nally or Nina Pope,
Hi,
I am a student at Portsmouth University studying IT. One of my
options is the Internet and I have been set an assignment looking at
healthcare issues available on the net. I have chosen to specialise
in the area of breast cancer and wanted to restrict my search to the
UK to see how we are helping paitents here and how we are supporting
our medical profession. However, apart from your valuable site and
the fantastic exhibition by Jo Spence I am having difficulty locating
much else. Do you know of any other pages worth investigating or if
there are special pages where the medical profession can stay up to
date on research? I would be very grateful for any help as I seem to
be at a standstill with this.
Many thanks
Claire

Dear Marie Nally and Nina Pope
I thought you might be interested to know that my theatre company The Ashton
Group Contemporary Theatre is touring an award nominated new play about
breast cancer next March/April/May: EATING THE ELEPHANT by Julia Darling.
Julia had breast cancer in 1995 and the play reflects her experiences. It's
powerful, moving and very funny...a really life affirming show.
I'm booking the second tour at the moment and will have dates next month.
Best wishes

Hi Marie
I called recently about my national tour of Julia Darling's Play about breast
cancer.
Well we had some good news, we've been awarded lottery funding to take it out
with a photographic exhibition of portraits of women who have had the
disease. The photos will be taken in specially set up workshops around the
country by NE photographer Sharon Bailey. I'm about to appoint an arts in
Health worker to help up these workshops. More news later

We are two students who need some information on Breast Cancer Awareness
month for a PR project. If you have any answers to any of the following
questions, we would be very grateful!
1/ Do you know how Breast Cancer Awareness Month came about? Was it a
single charity's idea?
2/ How long has it been happening for (how many years?)
3/ How did you/breast cancer charities communicate that it was breast cancer
awareness month to the public?
4/ How do you publicise charitable events?
5/ What are the aims of this years campaign? Is it to raise a certain
amount or to develop awareness?
6/ How many people are involved in this campaign?
7/ Who specifically are you targeting?
8/ How long have you been preparing for Breast Cancer Awareness month?
9/ Were you limited in what you could do by budget?
10/ Is there any press pack that you could send us?
11/ What events have been organised?
We look forward to hearing from you even if it is just an answer to one or
two of the above questions. Good luck in the cause.

Subject: breast cancer awareness month - reply
Hello Sandy and Stephanie,
BCA month came to the UK from America, where the idea of the pink ribbon also
originated. I have been asked about the origins in America but have never found a
definite answer. I guess it was an idea whose time had come and arose in a number
of places in the US about 4 or 5 years ago.
>2/ How long has it been happening for (how many years?)
This is 3rd year that BCA month has happened in the UK, with the bc organisations
taking it up and Estee Lauder putting posters in the tube.
>3/ How did you/breast cancer charities communicate that it was breast cancer
>awareness month to the public?
Our website deals almost exclusively on-line, via e-mail. I have also attended a
number of conferences and demonstrated the website during October and been
involved in bc info being put on Channel 4's web site.
There are over 25 bc-related UK organisations on our Contacts pages. Each
organisation's own press office communicates with the press and public, there has
been no coordinated effort apart from our Diary page of which I am aware.
>4/ How do you publicise charitable events?
On our Diary page.
>5/ What are the aims of this years campaign? Is it to raise a certain
>amount or to develop awareness?
There are over 25 bc-related UK organisations on our Contacts pages. Each gives
info about their own aims - support, info, research. The aim of our website has
been to raise awareness.
>6/ How many people are involved in this campaign?
2 of us made and maintain the website voluntarily in our own time with no funding.
>7/ Who specifically are you targeting?
People affected by breast cancer in the UK.
>8/ How long have you been preparing for Breast Cancer Awareness month?
Since August.
>9/ Were you limited in what you could do by budget?
No, we do not want funding because it comes with strings. We prefer our
independence. We are limited by our own time and energy.
>10/ Is there any press pack that you could send us?
No. we do not produce printed matter. Try Breast Cancer Care, contact info on
http://www.easynet.co.uk/aware/contacts/bccare/index.htm
>11/ What events have been organised?
See our Diary page:
http://www.easynet.co.uk/aware/events/diary.htm
It will change in the next few days but there will be a link from the Nov Diary to
the "Previous Diary" at the bottom of the page.
>We look forward to hearing from you even if it is just an answer to one or

Hi Brian,

Sure, though I think all our jpg's and gifs which include the pink ribbon also have
text, so you would need to cut in Photoshop or similar software. I think another of
our visitor's has done this and put the pink ribbon on his page:
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/jjsweeney
There used to be a whole site of different pink ribbons but I no longer have the URL
so you'd have to search for it.

Hello from Cambridge!
I was 32 when I discovered the lump that changed my life. That was just
over three years ago and it's been tough. Surgery, chemotherapy, and
radiotherapy - all while 5000 miles from home (I'm an American student
attending university in London). I just thought I'd let you know that I
had visited your web pages and they are quite nice. Easy to read and
navigate. I've added a link to your page from my own Women's Health

Good to hear from you. I am also American, though I have lived here 18 years. The NHS is certainly different to US medicine, at least in presentation. You must have had a lot to cope with.

Subject: Re: are there any prevention
>measures out there? My daughter is 47 and at high risk with her parents
> and grand parents with hormone feed cancer. Help''
Hello Leo,
FIrst, let me say clearly that I cannot offer any medical advice.
There are a number of factors which put a woman at increased risk of breast
cancer, but women without these 'risks' get cancer and women with these 'risk'
factors don't.
A good book which outlines the risk factors and some of the 'preventions' available
is Dr Cathy Read's "Preventing Breast Cancer - The Politics of an Epidemic." (Pandora 1995)
http://www.easynet.co.uk/aware/book/reviews/read.htm
This is not a 'how to' book, (there really isn't and can't be one), but it puts one's
worries in context and gives you an idea what lifestyle changes might make a
difference. It also has an extensive bibliography.
I hope this is of help.
best wishes,
Marie

link to a few of the big US cancer sites e.g. NCI and Oncolink. We will link to you
via our Feedback page, where I will put your e-mail when I next up-date this

Enjoy the Big Easy (if that's where you are), cher. For some reason it is high on

Subject: another breast cancer cause (Leading Ladies)
Thanks to everyone who wrote to me and linked to SHN's breast cancer
petition at http://breastcare.shn.net. The results have been great, and
the petition is still going strong.
I am involved with one more incredible breast care site, called Leading
Ladies. 'Leading Ladies' is a collection of female artists who've come
together to raise money for breast cancer awareness. On the site
you can talk about breast health in an on line forum, send a
postcard to remind a friend or relative about breast care, and
get a 'personal action checklist' of things you and your family
can do right now toward setting up a complete breast health routine.
The site is from Women's Wire and Reader's Digest... and can be experienced
at http://www.leadingladies.com
I would appreciate a link to Leading Ladies, if you have room to spare on
your sites. This time, the cause isn't only US-oriented either... its a
worldwide affair.
Thanks -- let me know if you have any questions about either SHN's or
Leading Ladies' effort.
