Both Marie and I have been
familiar with Jo Spence's work for some time. We had always
admired the power of her images and when we first set up the Breast Cancer Awareness
site last October we spoke about including some of her photographs.
Finally, a year on, we went down to the Women Artists Slide Library in search of
further information about her. We left armed with copies of her various articles,
both of us feeling rather overwhelmed by seeing her work again in the light of our
recent experiences of both breast cancer and the NHS. Our admiration for Jo Spence
as a person and for her work grew as we read through
her writing, some of which is reproduced here with a selection
of her images made throughout her journey with breast cancer.
